Works best with files under 100 MB. Page numbers are checked against your file before anything is extracted.

What is the Split PDF tool?

Splitting a PDF means pulling pages out of a larger document and saving them as their own files. Our free tool offers two ways to do it. The first is range extraction: you type which pages you want — for example 1-3, 5, 8-10 — and the tool builds a single new PDF containing exactly those pages, in the order you listed them. The second is full separation: every page of the document becomes its own one-page PDF, and all of them are packed into a ZIP file for a single download.

Like every tool on this site, the splitter works completely inside your browser. Your document is read and processed locally, so there is no upload step and nothing about your file ever reaches a server. Splitting copies the original pages directly rather than re-rendering them, which means the text, images, fonts, and layout of every extracted page are identical to the source — nothing is re-compressed or altered.

How to use it (3 steps)

  1. Add your PDF. Drop it onto the zone or click to browse. The tool reads it and shows the total page count so you know what you are working with.
  2. Choose your split mode. For a custom selection, keep "Extract page ranges" and type your ranges (e.g. 2-4, 9). To break the whole document apart, switch to "Every page as a separate file".
  3. Click "Split PDF". The tool checks your ranges against the real page count, extracts the pages, and downloads the result — a single PDF for ranges, or a ZIP of one-page PDFs for the full split.

When you'll need it (use cases)

  • Send only the relevant pages: a client asks for "the contract, not the whole 60-page pack" — extract pages 12–18 and send just those.
  • Share a chapter: pull one chapter out of a textbook PDF for a classmate instead of sending the entire book.
  • Break up a scanned batch: a scanner saved ten forms as one file — split them so each form becomes its own document.
  • Remove unwanted pages: extract everything except the pages you want gone, effectively deleting them from your copy.
  • Organize an invoice run: split a merged invoice PDF into individual files, one per invoice, ready to email.

Tips for the best results

  • Ranges follow the pattern 1-3, 5, 8-10: single pages and hyphen ranges, separated by commas. The tool validates each number and tells you exactly what is wrong if a range is invalid.
  • Pages are extracted in the order you list them, so 5, 1-2 gives you page 5 first, then pages 1 and 2.
  • If a PDF is password-protected it cannot be opened in the browser — remove the password first, then split.
  • On very long documents, the "every page" ZIP option can take a minute on a phone — keep the browser tab in the foreground while it works.
  • Extracted pages are byte-for-byte copies of the originals: quality never changes, and text stays selectable and searchable.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a PDF into separate pages?
Upload your PDF and choose the "Every page as a separate file" option. The tool saves each page as its own PDF and packs them into a ZIP you download in one click.
How do page ranges work in the split tool?
Type ranges like 1-3, 5, 8-10. The tool pulls those exact pages into one new PDF in the order you listed them. Page numbers that do not exist in your file are rejected with a clear error.
Is it safe to split sensitive PDFs here?
Yes. Splitting runs 100% in your browser — your file is never uploaded to any server, so it is safe for contracts, medical records, and financial documents.
Does splitting change the quality of the pages?
No. The tool copies the original pages directly without re-rendering them, so text, images, and formatting stay exactly as they were in the source file.
